People are often interested in the smallest smoke detectors that they can find. The small size of these devices makes them easy to install and fit into almost any situation, regardless of how big or small the space is.

In this article, we will review some of the best options on the market as well as highlight a few important things to consider before making a purchase.

Quick Tip:

While de difference in sizes between smoke detectors can seem small, a device that is 2 inches smaller is actually a big deal. Remember that on a 4 inch device, 2 extra inches is equivalent to a 50% increase in size!

Are All Smoke Detectors the Same Size?

No. Smoke detectors come in all shapes and sizes, with most being somewhere between 6 inches high and 4 inches wide. However, some larger options are available if you have a particularly large space to fill.

You might ask yourself why would someone want a larger smoke detector? The answer is that the size of the detector has a direct relationship to the size of the sensors, which then increases their level of sensitivity.

This is especially important when you consider that smoke particles move at 450 ft per second. THis means they can dissipate very quickly especially in homes with high ceilings .

Choosing The Right Size For Your Space

Given all this information, it’s easy to see why some people might not need a larger device. If you live in an apartment or very small space this won’t apply to you. You’ll only need a smaller device, which in addition to being cheaper and look bette it’ll also be more than enough protection.

However, if you live in a house or have a very large area to protect, you should aim for a larger device and look for specific smoke detectors designed for large homes.

The below paragraphs goes through several categories of smoke detector devices. Depending on whether your current device is hardwired or battery-powered review the paragraph that makes the most sense for you.

Here’s How We’ll Do The Comparisons

For comparison I’ll first give you the dimensions of one of the most sold hardwired smoke detector on Amazon. The First Alert BRK SC9120B Hardwired Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector has over 16,000 amazon reviews. It’s a great product we’ve reviewed else where on

It measures 5.6 x 5.6 x 1.9 inches

So for all of the items listed below we’ll not only give you the dimensions but also give you the % of how much smaller the next devices are than this traditional device.

Smallest Low Profile Battery-Powered Smoke Detector

All of the smallest battery-powered smoke detectors tend to be smaller than their hard-wired counter parts. We’re assuming that this has something to do with the components required in a hardwired smoke detector that aren’t required in a battery-powered device.

If you are looking for a battery-powered smoke detector you’re in luck!

One advantage of small battery powered smoke detectors is that they often make use of lithium batteries, which are smaller than the alkaline-powered smoke detectors. (Multiple AA batteries takes a lot of room)

More than that the lithium-based smoke detectors last much longer too! That means that you won’t have to change batteries nearly as often.

1. The Small Siterwell Smoke Detector

Small and exquisite is the best way to describe this battery operated smoke detector. Its 10 year 3V lithium battery make sure it last for a long time. Lithium instead of alkaline batteries means that you don’t have to worry about replacing the battery!

This device has been manufactured up to UL standards which means that it has passed the NFPA’s codes.

Despite being compact, it makes use of high-quality photoelectric sensors that will reduce the risk of fire and give you extra time to control or escape. It’s easy to install and comes with all mounting hardware needed!

Once again, this device does not include a CO detector. Device #3 on this list is one of the devices that includes this.

One unique feature of this device is it’s LDC display, which tells you information about the state of the device.

While this device is not as small as the ones prior in this list it is still significantly smaller than traditional device. It also looks much cooler than that boring beige box we are all used to seeing over our head.

Smallest Low Profile Hardwired Smoke Detector

As we mentioned earlier the smallest smoke detectors are all battery-powered. While doing our research for this article we could not find any smoke detectors that were significantly smaller than the standard size of the device.

We’re not sure why this is the case. We think this might have to do with certain standards in the manufacturing of the device that might ensure that they are visible and easy to find.

On the other hand it’s very possible that smoke detectors manufacturers never looked into developing smaller devices. All of the hardwired devices on the market are between 5.75 inches to 6 inches in width and none are smaller.

Small Smoke Detector for RV

If you’re looking for a smoke detector for your RV you’ll want to get a lithium-powered battery smoke detector. The best kind is a combination smoke and CO detector as the majority of RVers will need (or at least want) both types of protection.

See above for our recommendations on the smallest battery-powered smoke detectors.

Quick Tip:

Make sure to place this device on an isolated surface. If the device and batteries within it get cold, it will quickly run out and you will need to replace it.

Small Smoke Detector for Apartment

The best smoke detectors are the basic ionization sensor models. (More information on the difference between Ionization and Photoelectric detectors on this article) These are typically found in most homes, and they’re very easy to install.

All you need is a screwdriver, electrical tape, and some good old-fashioned elbow grease!

If you are renting the apartment and will not be doing wiring work battery-powered is the way to go. They are also the most reasonably priced option.

They are also extremely safe because there is no chance of getting shocked while touching them, unlike hardwired smoke detectors which require an electrician to setup.

People are often interested in the smallest smoke detectors that they can find. The small size of these devices makes them easy to install and fit into almost any situation, regardless of how big or small the space is.

One other reason we hear a lot is because smoke detectors are plain ugly. Well if that’s how you feel why don’t you take a look our article on the top smart smoke detectors for sale. These amazing devices not only do much more but are also much better looking!
