This article is the final article in our 3 part blog series on smart smoke detectors.
For more information on smoke detector guidelines to look for when making your purchase check out our first post. And to learn more about all of the benefits of new smart smoke detector technology please read our previous article.
We recommend you at least read about the benefits of such devices when compared to traditional technology. This will help you make up your mind as to whether you want to make the additional investment.
After our research we truly believe in the value of such devices, however as a home owner you also need to make this decision yourself. Don’t forget that if you live in the United States, you might need to purchase up to 1 device per floor and bedroom in your home.
Enough with the intro, let’s get right into our article!
Only a Top 4?
That’s right, this article only has 4 different smart smoke detectors. We would have loved to provide you with a longer list of top devices on the market, but the reality is that there aren’t that many manufacturers making these devices.
When making this list we avoided adding:
- Smoke detectors that claimed to be ‘smart devices’ but which didn’t have the features we would want in a smart device
- Avoided adding devices from websites which we didn’t trust. Because these devices ensure the safety of your home, we don’t think you should be purchasing an untested product
With that being said, the first product on this list is by far the most superior product on the market.
1. Google Nest Protect Smoke Alarm
Most Advanced
Developed by Nest, one of the most trusted brands in smart home devices, this smart smoke detector contains all of the features of other devices and much much more.
This is more than just your typical smoke and CO detector, we’re talking about an extremely advanced smart home device. Nests Split Spectrum Sensor looks for multiple smoke signals, from light smoke to actual flames to ensure the warning matches the level of danger.
Get phone alerts so you know all of this without needing to be right on top of things and if alarms start blaring unexpectedly, use the app to silence the alarm.
Best Value for Money
Developed by Nest, one of the most trusted brands in smart home devices, this smart smoke detector contains all of the features of other devices and much much more.
Onelink Smoke Detector is a 2-in1 alarm that detects both smoke and carbon monoxide. Like other devices on this list notifications are sent to you as alerts on your phone.
Voice alerts inform you of the type of danger, so with the push of a button, you’ll know if the alarm was caused by harmless steam or something more serious.
Onelink seamlessly connects to other home devices so alarms from multiple areas will alert you as well as work with Amazon Alexa for easy setup and control.
Commercial-Grade
Reviewing the features offered in this device, we view this smoke detector as being the best for commercial purposes.
We love First Alert’s Z-Wave Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide alarm. It is much cheaper than others on this list and has over 6,000 Amazon reviews that give the product an average review of 4.6/5.
This device has compatibilities with other smart devices such as the Ring doorbell, however it does have limited compatibility with other devices. This smoke detector uses Z-wave technology and will require you to purchase a Z-wave smart hub before being to combine it to your other smart device hub.
Most Inexpensive
We are aware that these smart devices can get pretty expensive. It's for this reason that we're very happy to see that one manufacturer has made a great device currently for sale for around 25$
Clear the air of false alarms with Ecoey WiFi Smoke Detector Alarm. We love this device that offers smart device features from at the lowest price point we’ve ever seen.
While it’s clear that this brand and their device haven’t been on the market for as long as some of the competing products mentioned on this list, the price might make up for it.
This product is compatible with more smart hubs than most, however is only battery-operated and doesn’t come in a wired version. Take note! Given the additional components required to make smart devices work than traditional devices batteries on these smoke detectors will run out much quicker than on your old smoke detectors.
