Amazon Alexa or simply Alexa is an AI-based home assistant which can connect/integrate with other Alexa enabled device and provide voice control over all connected device. Alexa enabled thermostats are getting a lot of attraction nowadays because it becomes so convenient to control temperature and related operations with voice. In this article, I list some of commonly used Alexa thermostat commands, you can use these existing command and can make your own through AWS Lambda console.

I recently reviews programmable thermostats under My Budget where Alexa enabled thermostats are also listed you can get one to enable voice controls for your heat and cooling device.

Alexa Command to check the current temperature at a thermostat

“Alexa, what’s the <thermostat name> temperature?”

Example– “Alexa, what’s the thermostat temprature?”

Like here if you set the name of your thermostat as “Nest” then you must use this command “Alexa, What’s the Nest temprature?” while using this command use the thermostat name that you set during the initial setup. You also can use the below listed quick commands if you are not using any sensor, it will return you the current temprature:

“Alexa, what is the temperature inside?”

“Alexa, what is the temperature in <thermostat name>?” 

Alexa Command to check the current temperature at a Sensor

“Alexa, what’s the <sensor name> temperature?”

Example– “Alexa, what’s the kids room temprature?”

The modern smart thermostats comes with room temprature that you can place in differnet zones like if you place a sensor in your kid’s room and name that sensor as “kid’s room” during your initial setup then you 

Alexa Command to check the current temperature a thermostat is set to

“Alexa, what is the <thermostat name> set to?”

Example– “Alexa what is the thermostat set to?”

If you use a simple command like “Alexa what is te temprature?” without using the thermostat name then it will tell you the temprature from the weather. You need to use the thermostat name to get the temprature which it is set to like if you set the thermostat name as “Ecobee” then you must use this command as “Alexa what is the Ecobee set to?”

Alexa Command to set the specific temperature on a thermostat 

“Alexa, set <thermostat name> to <desired temperature>

Example– “Alexa, set thermostat to 20° C”

If you set your thermostat to follow the temprature in Fahrenheit then you must follow that while communicating with your thermostat through Alexa. In this commned thermostat name and temperature can be differnet for everyone.

Alexa Command to increase or decrease a thermostat temperature set point by a set amount

“Alexa, raise the <thermostat name> temperature by <desired number> degrees”

Example– “Alexa,raise the thermostat temprature by 5°C”

“Alexa, lower the <thermostat name> temperature by <desired number> degrees”

Example– “Alexa, lower the thermostat temprature by 5°C”

It is always a good idea to use a command “Alexa what is the thermostat set to?” before raising or lowering temprature may be temprature is not reached to the set level yet. In the above listed command thermostat name and temperature number can be different.

Alexa Commnad to raise or lower a thermostat temperature by 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degree Celsius

“Alexa, increase the <thermostat name> temperature”

Example– “Alexa, increase the thermostat temperature”

“Alexa, decrease the <thermostat name> temperature”

Example– “Alexa, decrease the thermostat temperature”

These are most simple commands to increase or decreae the temprature and allow you to set the temprature quickly, thermostat name can be differnet for every use, use what you set during initial setup. you can use other quick commands for similar tasks whle sikkiping the thermostat name and it will get you the exact results of above listed commands, like:

“Alexa, make it warmer in here”

“Alexa, make it cooler in here”

Alexa Command to select heating/cooling or automatic mode

“Alexa, set the <thermostat name> to <heating/cooling/automatic>
“Alexa, turn <thermostat name> to <heat/heating/cooling>” 

Example– “Alexa set the thermostat to heating”

Example– “Alexa turn thermostat to cooling”

These commands allow you to quickly switch between different modes like if its working on cooling you can set it to heating or automatic with just your mouth words. My preffered way is automatic bhut its only advised if you are using latest model of Nest or Ecobee. You can use similar simple commands to turn off a speficif mode like:

“Alexa, turn off the heat”

“Alexa, turn off the cooling”

Alexa commands to turn on or off the thermostat

“Alexa, turn on <Thermostat Name>

“Alexa, turn off <Thermostat Name>

Example– “Alexa turn on thermostat”

When you are not using smart features of your thermostat and to dictate your thermostat the temprature and setting every time then you better switch off smart features and can use above listed command to turn on or Off the thermostat conviniently.

Alexa Command to set the thermostat to specific temprature for specific hours

“Alexa, set the <thermostat name> to <twenty-five degrees> for <duration/time>

Example– “Alexa set the thermosta to 20°C for 2 hours”

Example– “Alexa, set the thermostat to seventy-two degrees for thirty minutes” 

Just imagin you enter in the house and you wnat a lower temperature then you can use this command after the specific time the thermostat will resume its usual business. Remember it will not effect the schedual or automatic setting this command can be used to get a specific temprary temperature.

Alexa commad to resume the schedual

“Alexa, resume <thermostat> schedule”

Example– “Alexa, resume thermostat schedule”

The previous command will set a temporary temprature for you for a specific time, and this one will resume the schedual so when you feel that now its temprature and you fool down and want a normal one you can use this command and thermostat will start following its usual schedual.

Alexa command to turn on the fan of thermostat

“Alexa, trigger <thermostat name> fan”

Example- “Alexa, trigger nest fan”

This command will turn on fan for fifteen minutes, you can use this command when your main cooling device is on but you still want to get cool air.

Some Quick Commands that can be used with any thermostat

Suppose that you’ve named your thermostat “house.”

  • “Alexa, set house to 68 degrees”
  • “Alexa, raise (or increase) house by 2 degrees”
  • “Alexa, lower (or decrease) house by 4 degrees”
  • “Alexa, set house to heat”
  • “Alexa, set house to cool”
  • “Alexa, set house to auto”
  • “Alexa, set house to off”
  • “Alexa, what is the temperature in house?”
  • “Alexa, what is house temperature?”
  • “Alexa, what is house set to?”

Alexa Commands – List of ecobee plus skill commands

Check the current temperature at a thermostat or room sensor

“Alexa, ask ecobee the temperature” 
“Alexa, ask ecobee the <thermostat or sensor name> temperature” 

You can simply ask for the temprature if you are not using any room sensor and it will return you the room temprature where the main unite (thermostat) is installed, and when you have installed the different room sensors then you need to include the name of sensor or thermostat to get temperature.

Check a thermostat’s current set point temperature and System Mode 

“Alexa, ask ecobee what the thermostat is set to”
“Alexa, ask ecobee what the <thermostat name> is set to”

Before making any changes to your temprature its necessary to get know what is current temperature and setting or mode, this command will get you all information that you need to move on.

Check what equipment is currently running

“Alexa, ask ecobee what equipment is running”
“Alexa, ask ecobee what equipment is running on the <thermostat name>

When you feel unpleasant and when you feel that something is worng you can just use this command to check which equippements are running, the information also can be used to optimize your thermostat for energy efficiency.

Set the temperature on a thermostat

“Alexa, ask ecobee to set the temperature to <number> degrees”
“Alexa, ask ecobee to set the <thermostat name> temperature to <number> degrees”

This command is not used very often becuase once you set your thermostat for the preffered temprature it keep following your instructions. 

Lower a thermostat temperature set point by 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degree Celsius

“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m hot”
“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m hot in the <thermostat name>

The first command is very simpe you can add cool to raise the remprature, its simple yet quick way to change the temprature of your thermostat. Remember that it only work with Ecobee.

Increase or decrease a thermostat temperature set point by a set amount

“Alexa, tell ecobee to raise/lower the temperature by <number> degrees”
“Alexa, tell ecobee to raise/lower the <thermostat name> by <number> degrees”

This command will help you to set a temprary temprature for a specific time, it will not disturb your schedual and you can resume your schedual with below command when you do not wnat a differnet temprature anymore or leaving home.

Cancel a Hold and resume a thermostat’s schedule

“Alexa, tell ecobee to resume schedule”
“Alexa, tell ecobee to resume schedule in the <thermostat name>

When there is a schedual in place and you are using a termprary setting to get a differnet temprature then you can use this command to resume the schedual, it will end all of your temporary settings.

Set a thermostat to Home comfort setting temperature indefinitely

“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m back home”
“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m back home in the <thermostat name>

I found that when you are using your Ecobee thermostat on the automatic mode there i no need of such command in that case because Ecobee is intelligent enough to detect your pressence and can get your location through motion activation and mobile, but when auomatic or smart features are turn off then you have to use this command. 

When you replace the i’m back home with i’m leaving it will turn on the away comfort setting that is usually energy saving, the exact commands are:

“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m leaving”
“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m leaving in the <thermostat name>

Set a thermostat to the Home, Away, or Sleep Comfort Setting indefinitely

“Alexa, ask ecobee to set the thermostat to home/away/sleep”
“Alexa, ask ecobee to set <thermostat name> to home/away/sleep”

Switching modes while using Ecobee is quite easy this is a simple command to tell your thermostat a mode that you want on immidiate basis. you can use above listed command to get your sleep comfortable setting or it can be a simple one like:

“Alexa, tell ecobee good night”
“Alexa, tell ecobee good night in the <thermostat name>

Set a thermostat fan to ON

“Alexa, ask ecobee to turn the fan on”
“Alexa, ask ecobee to turn the fan on in the <thermostat name>

When you main device is off and you want to get some pleasant air you can simply use this command, it will turn on the fan.

Change a thermostat system mode (Heat/Cool/Auto/OFF)

“Alexa, ask ecobee to switch to Heat/Cool/Auto/OFF mode”
“Alexa, ask ecobee to switch to Heat/Cool/Auto/OFF mode in the <thermostat name>

Create a Vacation

“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m going on vacation
“Alexa, tell ecobee I’m going on vacation from <start date> to <end date>”in the <thermostat name>

This is my favorite command, a very simple and basic commad to suspend all of thermostat operations. you can use this command when you suppose to not come home for several days, going outstation or on a vacation.

Most Commonly Used Alexa Thermostat Commands 

  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to set the thermostat to home mode.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to resume the schedule.” or “”Alexa, ask Ecobee to cancel hold.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee if the heating is enabled.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee if the dehumidifier is running.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to turn the fan on.”
  • “Alexa, ask ecobee to set a vacation from tomorrow to next Wednesday.”
