A smart thermostat is a great way to save money on your energy bills. These devices have great wireless capabilities that allow you to control them remotely with an app or text message, making it easy for you to turn down the heat before bedtime or check that there’s enough hot water for a shower after being stuck in traffic. If you’re reading this post you probably already know that. This blog post will get into how these smart thermostats connect to your phones.

How Does Smart Thermostat Wireless Technology Work?

Do Smart Thermostats use Wifi or Bluetooth?

Almost all wireless thermostats work on WIFI. This is necessary to be able to use the app features while you’re away from your home. If a thermostat worked on Bluetooth you would only be able to access app features when you would be in the same room as the thermostat. Think how close Bluetooth speakers need to be to phones to get a clear connection.

There are exceptions to this rule. If you absolutely want to use a thermostat that works with Bluetooth there are some devices such as this Coleman-Mach model. It doesn’t require WIFI at all.

Without WIFI connection, there would no remote access to thermostats. This is a very important feature for all home owners. For more info on WIFI thermostats, read our review of the 10 best cheap wifi thermostats of 2021.

Will a Smart Thermostat Work Without Wifi?

If the features that must be controlled through the app are no longer accessible once your smart thermostat is disconnected from WiFi.

Geofencing, humidity levels, and scheduling are all examples of smart thermostat features that may be controlled via a mobile app. If your smart thermostat loses WiFi, you will lose access to these functions.

While this might not be an issue if you’re at your house, this can certainly be inconvenient if you’re away from home.

Lukily, many manufacturers will have a feature that will alert your phone when it can no longer connect to your smart thermostat. The app will send you a push notification on your smartphone, tablet, or other portable gadgets when the thermostat’s WiFi connection goes down. An email may also be sent to your account linked with the thermostat.

Take note of how often this happens, if you see this happening a lot it’s very possible that you have issues with your wifi or thermostat that needs fixing.

Can WIFI Thermostats Get Hacked?

WIFI Thermostats are still WIFI connected so they can be hacked just like any other WIFI device. Despite this issue being the case, there are haven’t been any major cases of thermostat being hacked. We don’t think this should be a major concern for home owners.

If you’re concerned about the security of your WIFI thermostat, consider buying one with encryption or using WPA/WEP, which is more difficult to hack than the typical home WIFI network. One best practice that ensures your device is safe is to ensure it is always up to date. This means that if your app or thermostats asks you if you’d like to update, make sure to accept the update.

Steps To Troubleshooting a Wifi Thermostat That Doesn’t Connect

First, wifi smart thermostats use your wifi network to connect to the internet. If you’re using an older wireless router these devices will probably work just fine but if not they might have difficulty connecting. or even worse problems could occur when it comes time for them to send data back and forth with your phone. A wifi smart thermostat might disconnect from the wifi suddenly, or your wifi signal might be too weak to support a wifi smart thermostat. If this is happens to your thermostat try to the following steps:

  1. Test your internet speed using the following link. (An unstable wifi connection will cause issues with any device that tries to access the interner)
  2. Move the router closer to the smart thermostat.
  3. If the above solved the problem, consider a wifi extender. These devices allow your wifi to reach longer distances. Especially useful for getting strong wifi around thick walls or into basements.
  4. Review the manufacturers troubleshooting guide to reset your smart thermostat.
  5. If all else fails, you will likely have to contact your thermostat’s customer support.

What is a Bluetooth Thermometer?

While most thermostats use WIFI there are numerous thermometers that use Bluetooth wireless connections. Bluetooth thermometers are smart home devices that help monitor temperatures of your house or business. These devices connect to a mobile app for you to keep track of the temperature from anywhere with internet access.

Unlike a thermostat they are not connected to your heating and cooling appliances. This means that you won’t be able to change the temperature, you’ll only be able to see what it is.

As mentioned earlier, the main benefit is that they don’t require WIFI, so as long as they’re within range of their Bluetooth signal it can work perfectly. Even if your WIFI is down or you install one for a place that doesn’t have WIFI.
